Restaurant Week: ilili
Ok. Let’s talk about how intensely delicious this restaurant is. ilili is a contemporary Lebanese restaurant with huuuuge floor to ceiling wood walls. The whole space is broken up into various rooms so that any room can potentially be closed off for a private party. The two floor restaurant also features a DJ booth and a cute little lounge area upfront alongside the bar.
I’m a little giddy over the food I ate last night, so bear with me. This was definitely one of the best Restaurant Week experiences I’ve ever had. First of all, they give you a sample drink! Have you ever heard of such a glorious thing? A tasting of their delightfully refreshing Fresh Meadow cocktail which contains St. Germaine, ginger, cucumber and lemon. It’s quite a treat.
Where other restaurants tend to fall short during Restaurant Week, ilili shines. Let me just briefly list off our choice of food before I go into detail. For two ($35x2 = $70) our feast consisted of Kebab Kerez, Moujadara, Tuna Belly, Sweet Maine Shrimp, Roasted Lamb Leg, Steel Head Trout, ilili Candy Bar, Lebanese Ice Cream. Do you see what I mean when I say the restaurant shines? All this gourmet, beautifully presented, richly flavored, large portioned food for $70.
I’m just going to touch upon the best dishes, which of course, happen to be the two lamb dishes (insert smiley face of shame here). The Kebab Kerez, lamb and beef meatballs, is served with a cherry sauce and Kataifi. The flavors compliment each other so perfectly that it’s almost as if the cherries were put on this earth for the sole purpose of accompanying savory lamb meatballs. The shredded kataifi on top takes the dish to a whole extra level and makes you question whether you might be eating the best lamb-cherry-dessert that ever existed. I’m hoping that for the sake of the dish, my description is enticing to you and not utterly disgusting because honestly, its divine.
Now for the Lamb Leg, served with citrus, beets, mint, walnut and labne (Greek Yogurt). The lamb broke apart in shreds as in, cooked to perfection, the flavor was rich with Lebanese spices and the labne added that extra silky, creamy finish to each bite and allowed the spices to sort of cool a bit as you ate.
The tuna belly, shrimp and steel head trout were also fantastic, but I find that no fish dish will ever be as full of rich flavor as a meat dish. But regardless, I cannot get enough of this restaurant, their menu is extensive, every dish looks mouth-watering and the service and atmosphere compliment the cuisine perfectly.
